On 13 July in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his Kazakh counterpart, Yermek Kosherbayev. The two sides discussed expanding bilateral trade, strengthening technological cooperation, advancing artificial intelligence, and coordinating within international frameworks.
According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting reviewed the progress of the China-Kazakhstan “permanent comprehensive strategic partnership” and the implementation of agreements reached by the two countries’ leaders. Particular attention was paid to the goal of doubling bilateral trade turnover.
The meeting comes ahead of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference and the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance, scheduled to take place in Shanghai on 17-20 July. Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is also expected to attend. His visit is set to include a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Wang Yi and Kosherbayev also discussed cooperation within the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the China-Central Asia format, and other multilateral platforms. According to China’s Foreign Ministry, the Kazakh side reaffirmed its support for the “One China” principle.
Following the talks, Kosherbayev signed the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation on behalf of the Kazakh government. The China-initiated organization, headquartered in Hong Kong, aims to resolve disputes between states and commercial entities through mediation.
The organization’s founding convention was signed in May 2025 by China and more than 30 other states. Beijing presents it as a complementary mechanism to international judicial and arbitration procedures.
